Baptism
Why Baptism?
Jesus calls His followers to be baptized. After giving your life to Him, baptism is the next step—a public declaration of your faith and a commitment to grow in a community of believers.
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."
– Matthew 28:19-20
The Meaning of Baptism: Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ
Water baptism symbolizes dying to our old way of life and rising to a new life in Christ. It is an outward expression of an inward transformation—a public declaration that we now live for Jesus.
Through baptism, we show our faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we commit ourselves to following Him. It also represents a clean conscience before God, made possible by Christ’s sacrifice.
“And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God.”
– 1 Peter 3:21
Who Can Be Baptized?
Every person who has believed and accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior is a candidate for baptism.
“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.”
— Acts 2:41
“But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip…”
— Acts 8:12–13
How Does Calvary Baptize?
We baptize by immersion in water, just as Jesus was.
“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water…”
— Matthew 3:16
The word baptize comes from the Greek word meaning to immerse, dip, or completely cover. That’s why we follow the example of Jesus and the early church by baptizing fully in water.
The Bible compares baptism to a burial: “We were therefore buried with Him through baptism…”
— Romans 6:4
“…buried with Him in baptism…”
— Colossians 2:12
Water baptism symbolizes dying to our old life and rising to walk in a new life in Christ. It is an outward expression of an inward decision to follow Jesus. “Baptism… now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
— 1 Peter 3:21
